Average lifespan of the Basenji

Basenji

Basenji is an ancient breed that has its roots in Africa. Once a local breed that helped humans in hunting, it is now more often a companion dog. This breed is also known for its non-barking characteristic, fox-like sleek appearance, and lively movements. It is highly intelligent and quite adaptable to various living conditions.

I. Average Lifespan

According to the statistics of the health of the canine population of the whole world and the positive experience of 28-year breeders, life expectancy basenji should be in the range of 12-14 years. This way, they are among small- and medium-sized dogs, lifespans of which are closest to Shiba Inu and Welsh Corgi breeds.

There are some Basenjis that, under scientifically sound care, might live over 15 years, with a few going as far as 16 years. On the contrary, a rather small number of them which are genetically prone and badly cared for might have lifespans of less than 10 years. The reason for such differences is the extent of the control over the interaction between the genetically programmed lifespan potential and the care conditions of the environment – the former sets the theoretical upper limit and the latter determines the degree in which a Basenji reaches that maximum.

II. Recommendations for Lifespan Extension

1. The type of dog’s food should be of high quality and suitable for the life of the Basenji:
- Puppy: Focus on the calcium-phosphorus balance that would be required for the development of the skeleton.
- Adult: Opt for a food with protein content that is moderate (20%-25%).
- Senior: Lower the fat and raise the fiber in the diet.

2. Create a habit of exercising every day with a 30-45-minute stay out of the house. You can also use the interactive games like fetch and agility training. The amount of exercise needed will be met while a bond with the owner will be strengthened.

Keep medical records in a comprehensive format that tracks vaccination, deworming, and the date of the doctor’s visit. Senior Basenjis should go through their annual comprehensive physicals twice a year, and their daily oral hygiene (3 times a week brushing) should be kept up.

3. Be observant of the physical changes that take place in your Basenji. Go to the doctor immediately if the situation is one of extreme thirst and urination, vision abnormalities, or that of hurting joints. The time of survival for dogs suffering from Fanconi syndrome will be very long if the diagnosis is made at an early stage and the medication is given consequently.
