Basset Hound Breed Deep Dive

Basset Hound

Basset Hounds as puppies have a delightfully dopey look, and later they become dogs with a mild, honest character, and a loud and deep voice, which have even made them known as “walking subwoofers.” Their very big ears make their general appearance look like they are a bit lazy but still a very attractive one.

The Basset Hound or simply Basset is a dog breed that initially comes from France. It had been a very successful tracking hound in the past as it was mainly used for hunting small animals like raccoons, foxes, and rabbits although it rarely hunts birds as well. The start of its pedigree goes back to the 19th century.

The odd-shaped hound has very sharp smelling capabilities. While tracking its prey, it lets out a very loud barking which is a characteristic that has made it known all over the world. It is one of France’s most famous hunting dog breeds, along with the Dachshund, both of which are long-bodied and short-legged.

1.Basset Hound Characteristics

Physical Appearance

The face looks like a full profile of a rounded dome-shaped skull. Ears are long and soft and their lower point is under the eye level. Eyes are dark brown and the pink lower eyelids can be seen. The body is long, wide, and usually the legs are short, and strong; the skin is loose and it has wrinkles. The feet are big and the toes are close and well-knit; the tail is long and its end is narrower, carried to a high point and when it goes upward it is curled.

Temperament

Despite the fact that the Basset Hound’s face is more or less sad, it is, however, a cheerful one. It is smart and vigilant, yet at the same time is very gentle, submissive, and empathic, and it has a loving and adorable character.

Coat

Its fur is of short, smooth and, dense, and retains its original resilience. The black, fawn, white color combination that is typical of hound tri-color is the base color pattern, although there are also lemon and white bicolor or tricolor hounds with different colored markings that occur naturally.

The Basset Hounds live a long and healthy life and are excellent on the track. The majority of people would be really surprised if they saw the Basset Hounds when they are supposed to be on the track because their short legs make them look like they are not able to do the task well. Yet their short legs also mean that they are made of a heavy bone structure with a substantial amount of bone density. This, consequently, gives them a lot of stability to be able to work for a very long period of time in the open ground without getting tired.

2.Basset Hound Pros and Cons

It is among the main disadvantages of the breed that the Basset’s growling is very loud and deep, and it is especially when the dog is left alone in the house that it does so after a short while to indicate its discontent. If you are extremely determined or infatuated with cleanliness then this dog would not probably be your favorite type because it has a habit of drooling quite frequently.

In their everyday care, their long ears are a bit more time consuming—the soft ear flaps often hang down, restricting that there is not much air circulation and that they could get ear infections. So, their owners should be ready for spending more time and perseverence than normal. Apart from this, the occurane of problems with the pets are rare and they are still easy-to-care-for.

A Basset Hound can never be mistaken for being in a bad mood with its always downcast look but in reality they have hearts of gold. Like all other dogs, they are always putting the owner first above all else.
