How to Train a Bichon Frise for Beginners

Bichon Frise

Bichon Frisés charm many households with their soft, adorable appearance and gentle temperament. However, to raise an obedient, well-behaved Bichon, scientific training is essential. Unlike high-energy breeds, Bichons are sensitive and affectionate, making the training core “positive reinforcement + patient guidance.” Below is a beginner-friendly training method.

I. Training Your Bichon Frise to Stop Random Barking

Unprovoked barking can be quite bothersome. Initially, when you want to stop the barking, firmly say “No bark!” to make it cease immediately. If ineffective, gently tap it with a rolled-up newspaper tube—this method often yields good results.

II. Teaching Your Bichon Frise to Sit

Place your hand on the dog’s waist and gently press downward while saying “Sit, sit.” Once seated, move a short distance away and give the “Sit” command while extending your hand horizontally downward. Repeat several times. Once mastered, a hand signal alone will suffice without verbal commands.

III. Teaching the Bichon Frise to Wave and Turn Around

Hold a treat above the dog’s head to entice it to stand on its hind legs in a “wave” position. Build on this by training it to turn in circles. Eventually, it should spin upon hearing the “turn around” command.

IV. Training “Give Paw” and “Shake Hands”

Begin by saying “Give paw.” Then, lift its left front paw with one hand and its right front paw with the other. While saying “Good, good,” withdraw one hand to stroke the Bichon Frise’s throat or chest. Offering a treat will accelerate learning.

V. Teaching the Down Position

First, have the dog assume the “sit” position. Then, while giving the “down” command, gently pull both front paws forward and lightly press down on the Bichon’s back to lower its chest to the ground. Repeat this action consistently.

VI. Training for Food Refusal

Train the Bichon Frise to eat only what the owner provides and refuse food from others. During training, select an unfamiliar person to occasionally offer the dog chili peppers or extremely bitter food. After tasting the unpleasant flavor, the dog will learn to reject food from strangers.
