This ancient and noble hunting dog stands out among hounds for its exceptional sense of smell. 1. Drooling

Basset Hounds drool frequently. If you’re a Virgo or have even mild OCD tendencies, this drool-prone breed might not be the best fit for you.

2. Grooming

Daily care focuses primarily on its long, floppy ears. Because they hang straight down without air circulation, ear infections are common. Daily ear cleaning is essential.

3. Clingy Nature

Basset Hounds have a gentle disposition and adore playing with children, making them ideal for families with kids or seniors. However, they absolutely cannot tolerate being left alone. Prolonged isolation may trigger destructive behavior as they become frustrated. If you plan to adopt one, ensure someone is home frequently.

4. Must Wear a Leash When Outdoors

As a qualified hunting dog, the Basset Hound constantly utilizes its special talents. Extremely persistent in tracking scents, it may become completely absorbed in following an “interesting” smell outdoors, making it highly prone to getting lost. 5. Weight Management

Basset Hounds have a hearty appetite and require ample nutrition during growth. However, as adults, they tend to gain weight easily. Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. If you’re not particularly active, this breed may not be the best fit.

6. Genetic Diseases

Joint disorders (hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia), eye conditions (entropion, glaucoma, etc.), and lymphoma are common. Once these arise, they demand both time-consuming care and significant financial resources.
