Cane Corso Dog Breed Health and Care

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso, also known by the same name, is a canine guard breed of large size from the Turkey region. It has a number of common features in the aspect of size and protection instincts with the Anatolian shepherd coming from the same place and both requiring scientific care to keep the health. This breed usually lives for 12-15 years and, through systematic management of health, the period of their cohabitation can be further extended.

Coat and Skin Care

The Karakocho has a short double coat: The inside layer is soft and insulating, and the outside one is coarse, durable. When brushing 1 to 2 times a week use a pin brush, which is designed for removing the shedding undercoat, to do it thoroughly. The amount of brushing should also be increased when spring and fall are the shedding seasons to avoid matting and other skin-related problems. It takes baths every 2-3 months only, as too frequent washing will remove the skin’s natural oil. Use pet-oriented shampoo, and make sure the pet is completely dry after washing so that fungi will not grow in the damp place. Also, look for wax buildup in ear canals every month, softly clean the outer ear with a cleansing solution for pet ears, and cut nails at intervals so that they do not get longer and cause pain.

Common Disease Prevention

Canes of Cane Corso type experience skeletal problems often because it is a large breed, and among these illnesses, there is hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia that the dog is at the most significant risk of. Do not let the dog do jumping excessively or climb stairs for a long time when it is still a puppy. After the age of 6 months, the dog should undergo skeletal supervision regularly. Heart and lung illness such as dilated cardiomyopathy is another reason for keeping an eye on the dog; annual cardiac ultrasounds should be done for it.

Along with cataracts, one more eye trouble that often occurs in the Cane Corso is that the eyelids turn inwards. If e.g. redness, swelling, or abnormal discharge is observed, check with the veterinary doctor without delay. Other than that, vaccination is the most important weapon to fight against viruses. Adhere firmly to the immunization program set by your vet, which will include regular vaccinations for rabies and distemper.

Diet and Exercise

Feed your dog with high-quality food that is rich in proteins but low in fat, and is specially made for big breeds. Such a diet provides the dog with gradual muscle building and release of the needed energy, at the same time, it prevents obesity caused by fat intake. It is necessary to add some trace elements to a meal such as calcium and phosphorus to let bones in a puppy grow strong and healthy. But care should be taken with the supplement dosage to ensure that it causes no skeletal deformities resulting from too much intake. Their growth rate slows down with the coming of adulthood necessitating the controlling of portions. To avoid consuming the amount of food reaching them beyond the requirement, feed them once or twice daily only.

The Cane Corso can be made to lose all of his energy in one hour or two of outdoor activity every day. The variety may include walking or running, taking the dog to the obedience class where it is trained to heel, sit, and lie down etc. This not only gets rid of the extra energy but also makes the bond with their owner stronger.

Keep off intense workout during the hottest time of the day. In summer time, take the early morning and late evening walks if you want to avoid getting overheated. At all times make sure that the dog has access to clean water in order to stay hydrated when exercising.
